The Legend of Situ Bagendit

Once upon a time in Northern Garut, there was lived a rich woman named  NyiEndit.  She was the richest people in the village.  Her house was very luxurious and her rice barn was very vast.  But she was mean so much.

     All of the farmers in the village always sold their harvest result to NyiEndit.  They were forced sold with cheap price if not wanted made trouble with NyiEndit’s assistant.  If their stock had been empty, they must bought from NyiEndit with expensive price.

“When is our life will change?” a farmer said to his friend, “I don’t endure again to life like this.”“We have to patient.  There will reply what she did to us.  God is never sleep!” his friend said.

 Meanwhile, NyiEndit was seeing her rice barn.

“How?Everything okay?”NyiEnditsaid.“Of course,Nyi.”NyiEndit’s assistant said.“Good job,” NyiEndit praised.

Some weeks later, people began run out of foods.

“Oh, no. Our rice stock begin become little.  We forced must buy to NyiEndit.  Our neighbor said that now the price is more expensive than we sold ago..” a farmer’s wife said.“Yeah. I’m tired with all of this suffering.  Oh God, please change our life..” the farmer said

.One day, a old woman came to NyiEndit’s house.“NyiEndit, can you give me some food? I’m very hungry,” the old woman said.“What?! You want some food?! Listen, old beggar! If you want food you have to work! Don’t ask to me! You better go now!” NyiEndit was very angry.“All right, I’ll go from here, but with one condition. You have to able pull out this my cane!” And then the old woman stuck her cane into earth.

     And hup! NyiEndit tried to pulled out the cane. But she couldn’t did it. After that, she ordered her assistant to did same something. The assistant couldn’t did it too.“Ha……ha……ha……! You’re so weak! Just stuck this cane, you couldn’t did it! Looking me!” the old woman said.

     She stuck her cane easily.  Suddenly there was out from the earth. Gradually, the water was too much and it drowned NyiEndit and her treasure.

From the incident formed a lake. People called Situ Bagendit. “Situ” means lake and “Bagendit” from word Endit.
